LEEDS CITY v. BARNSLEY
Leeds City brought their initial season to a close this afternoon on their own ground at Holbeck by meeting Barnsley, who are members of the Second Division of the League, and whom Leeds hope to meet in sterner struggles next season. The Barnsley side was somewhat of an experimental character and Leeds City played two or three new men in end to end play in the early stages of the game and both goals were assailed. Verrinder on the Leeds right, quickly gave a glimpse of his quality, and the brothers Howard making an opening for him, he accepted the opportunity and scored a goal for Leeds before the game was many minutes old.
Shortly after Jones, the Barnsley centre forward, getting possession, ran through all opposition, but his final effort hit the crossbar, and rebounded into play. Bishop then secured the ball in a fine position for scoring, but his shot also failed to reach the mark, going harmlessly over the posts. After this spell of attacking the Barnsley men were driven back, and their goal hotly assailed, the backs and goalkeeper being hard put to save their charge from the attacks of G. Howard and Verrinder, The trend of play, however, again changed, the Barnsley forwards getting within striking distance in a line and Beech equalised with a straight drive.
Afterwards the play fluctuated greatly, but Barnsley had slightly the better of matters for a considerable period, although their play never reached a high standard. Many well-meant efforts on the part of both teams often went wrong owing to the slippery state of the ground, but Jones managed to put Barnsley in front, after Mallinson had cleared a shot from the foot of Beech. Barnsley continued to keep the ball in the home half for the most part, with occasional erratic bursts by the home front line, and at the interval the score stood:- Barnsley 2 goals Leeds City 1 goal.
Result:- Leeds City 4 Barnsley 3
