Taylor started his career with local team Hibaldstow and joined Second Division Grimsby Town in August 1944. He guested for Leeds United at Right Back in two consecutive games near the end of the 1942-43 Football League Northern Section Second Championship campaign. His debut was on 27th March in a 5-4 win at St James’ Park against Newcastle United and this second and final game was in a 2-0 win over Bradford Park Avenue the following weekend. After the Second World War Taylor returned to Grimsby and had made twenty-one League and two F.A. Cup appearances in two seasons before the Mariners were relegated and Taylor joined Third Division North Southport in July 1951. He stayed at Haig Avenue for seven seasons and made two hundred and sixty-nine League appearances and scored one goal, from the penalty spot and also played in seventeen F.A. Cup ties. He moved to Oldham Athletic in July 1958 and was there for more than a season making fifty-one League and two F.A. Cup appearances before going to Non-League Brigg Town where he finished his football career. He died in 2005.
