Warburton started his career with Morecambe before joining Second Division Aston Villa in 1938, but did not play a senior game at Villa Park and he moved to First Division Preston North End in 1938. Once more he could no break into the first team at Deepdale and left for Third Division North Chester later in the season and in enough time to make ten appearances and score two goals, but World War Two intervened and the Football League fixtures were suspended for the duration of the War. He guested for Leeds United in the 1941-42 Football League Northern Section Second Championship and played twice both at Outside Right. He made his debut in a 1-2 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday on 4th April 1942 at Elland Road and made his second and final appearance in the next but one game as United beat Halifax Town 3-1 at home on 11th April 1942. He finished his career playing in Non-League football with his first club Morecambe and then Netherfield, Lancaster City, Ingleborough and Trimpell. He died in 1996.
