A schoolmaster, Ellson, known as “Matt”, joined Leeds in July 1920, from Frickley Colliery. He quickly established himself in the United’s first Football League season, scoring twice in the club’s first-ever victory when they beat Port Vale 3-1 at Elland Road in the club’s third game. However, the arrival of the experienced Jim Moore, coupled with an ankle injury sustained on the way to a friendly with Brodsworth Main in March 1922, forced him out of first team action. He rejoined Frickley Colliery in May 1922, but was given another chance in the Football League by Halifax Town later in May 1922, where he scored six goals in twenty-three games before being released in May 1924.
