Leeds-born Baines joined his home-town team Leeds City in 1917 and played his first game at Right-Back. He had an unbroken run of thirteen games, of which all but two were at Left-Back. He lost his place upon the arrival of Harry Millership and he soon moved to Non-League Rochdale in February 1919. When the Football League recommenced in 1919-1920 he signed for Rotherham County in June 1919. He appeared in each of Rotherham’s first five Football League appearances before losing his place, but returned to play two further games in February 1920. He made seven League appearances for them at Left-Back before returning to Non-League Rochdale in July 1920. He joined Accrington Stanley in June 1921 and played twice for them at Left-Back before ceasing to play League football.
