Johnson started with Bedlington in the North-East League before, according to the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Mercury, he joining Leeds City on 22nd April 1913 as an inside-forward. He was one of several new faces that signed for the new regime under Herbert Chapman. He played final reserve match of 1912-13 season. He had a long wait before he was called up for his only game for City at home to Grimsby Town in December 1913 where he helped City to a 4-1 victory as the replacement for Simpson Bainbridge. He did play some reserve games at inside forward and the odd one at outside right in the 1913-14 season. He then moved on to North Leeds Athletic in the local League.
