Thorpe started at Burnden Park with First Division Bolton Wanderers in 1906 and had two League games with them as an Outside Left before moving to Second Division Leeds City in 1907. He only managed nine League appearances at Elland Road but he proved his versatility by debuting at Right Half, then playing his next four games at Left Half before losing his place for two games, but came back to play twice at Left Back and then twice at Right Back, but those were to be his only games for City. He left for Southern League Crystal Palace in 1908 where he finished his career.
