He played for West Auckland and had trials with Bradford City before he joined Huddersfield Town in December 1929, from Cockfield. He did not make the Town first team and he joined Leeds in November 1930 where, despite scoring twice on debut, he could not oust Charlie Keetley and left for Luton Town of the Third Division South, in May 1932. He scored five times in fourteen League games before he moved to the Third Division North and Darlington in June 1933. He stayed there three years, scoring thirty-nine times in one hundred and sixteen League appearances, until he joined another Third Division North team, Chester City, in June 1936. He spent almost two seasons there, but only scored four goals in forty-four League appearances, before returning to Darlington in February 1938, to finish his career there a couple of seasons later, with another seven goals in the League from thirty-five games.
