  Castellon-born Hernandez was brought up and spent his youth in Castellon de la Plana. His first interest in football 
was kindled at local Junior clubs A. V. V. Rafalafena and C.D. Castellon, before moving on to CD Onda. There he scored 
five goals in twenty-six games in 2004-05 and attracted the attention of Valencia Mestalla, signing for them in July 2004 
when he was just seventeen. He progressed to Valencia CF a year later at eighteen, playing one game in 2005-06. He 
had scored four goals in sixteen games for the Valencia Mestalla in the 2006-07 season when he was loaned to Cadiz 
CF for the rest of the season, and while there he scored  four goals in twenty-two appearances as Cadiz came fifth in the 
Second Division. On 1st July 2007 he was given a free transfer to Getafe CF. He made his La Liga debut on 25th August 
2007 scoring the opening goal in the second minute  in a 1-4 defeat by Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in 
Seville, a game in which he played the full ninety minutes. He went on to score three goals in twenty-three starts and five 
games from the bench. His other goals came in a 2-0 win on 4th November 2007 at the El Sadar Stadium in Pamplona, 
Navarre, home of CA Osasuna, when he opened the scoring in the eightieth minute, while the third  was scored on 9th 
March 2008 in a 3-0 win at the Nueva Condomina Stadium, Churra, Mercia, home of Real Murcia CF, when again he 
opened the scoring in the fifty-ninth minute before giving way to  Jaime Gavilan in the seventy-third minute, as Getafe CF 
finished fourteenth in La Liga. In addition to games in La Liga, in the UEFA Cup he started eight and came off the bench 
once and scored four goals, while in the Copa Del Ray he started three ties and came off the bench three times and 
scored once. They were beaten in the final by Valencia 3-1. The goal in the Copa Del Ray came on 9th January 2008 in 
a 3-0 home win at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez Stadium in Getafe over Levante UD, when he scored in the seventy-eighth 
minute to make the score 3-0. His goals in the UEFA Cup came in a 1-2 defeat by Hapoel Tel Aviv on 29th November 
2007, when he got his teams consolation goal in the ninetieth minute at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez Stadium in Getafe. 
He again opened the scoring in a 2-1 win over Aalborg BK on 6th December 2007 with a goal in the tenth minute at the 
Nordjyske Arena at Aalborg, Denmark and on 19th December 2007 in a 2-1 home win over RSC Anderlech the again 
got the opener in the fourth minute in a game that he was Substituted off in favour of Mario Cotelo in the sixtieth minute 
and the fourth goal was at the Stadium of Light in Lisbon when he scored the winning goal in the sixty-sixth minute in a 
2-1 win on 6th March 2008 and it took Getafe into the final eight, where they were beaten by Bayern Munich. in July 
2008 Getafe CF sold him back to Valencia CF for £850,000. His first two games for Valencia CF were in the Super 
Cup against Real Madrid, when he came on as a substitute for Joaquin in both games. On 17th August 2008, at the 
Mestalla he came on in the sixty-fourth minute in a 3-2 win, while a week later at the Santiago Bernabeu in a 2-4 defeat 
he came on in the sixty-eighth minute. He made his starting debut in the first La Liga game of the season on 30th August 
2008 in a 3-0 home win over RCD Mallorca, when he was replaced in the sixty-third minute by Miguel Angel Angulo. In 
2008-09 season he went on to score three goals in twelve starts, and nine games from the bench, while he also sat 
unused on the bench on thirteen occasions, as Valencia came sixth in La Liga. He also scored once in six starts in the 
UEFA Cup and was once an unused substitute, while in the Copa Del Ray he scored once in four starts. In the UEFA 
Cup his goal came in the seventy-ninth minute of a 4-0 win over Rosenborg BK on 27th November 2008 at the 
Lerkendal Stadium, Trondheim, Norway to make the score 2-0. His three goals in La Liga were all at home at the 
Mestalla Stadium. The first was in a 1-1 draw with Recreativo Huelva on 14th March 2009, when after coming on as a 
substitute for Ruben Baraja in the sixtieth minute he scored the equaliser in the eighty-second minute. On 19th April 
2009, after coming on in the fifty-fifth minute to replace Joaquin he scored Valencia's third goal in the eighty-ninth 
minute of a 3-1 win over Sevilla FC and six days later in a 2-2 draw with FC Barcelona he gave his team a 2-1 lead a 
minute before half-time in a game that he played the full ninety minutes. His goal in the Copa Del Ray came in the 
Fifth Round 3-0 home win over Club Portugalete on 12th November 2008 in which he scored the third goal in the 
seventy-first minute in a tie that he played the full game. In season 2009-10 he was almost ever-present as Valencia 
came third in La Liga and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League before falling to Real Madrid on the away 
goal rule. In La Liga he scored five goals in twenty-five starts and eight games from the bench while being an unused 
substitute on two other occasions. He also scored twice in the Europa League from seven starts, three games from 
the bench and was also once an unused substitute and in the Europa League Qualifiers he scored once in his only 
start and sat on the bench unused in the other. His La Liga goals were well spread with his first coming in the first game 
on 30th August 2009 in a 2-0 home win over Sevilla FC, when he scored the second goal in the eightieth minute. His 
second goal game in the fifth game of the season in a 2-2 draw at home to Atletico Madrid when he levelled the 
scores at 1-1 in the twenty-fifth minute. In the eighth game of the season on 25th October 2009 he scored his third goal 
in the seventy-third minute as he made the score 2-0 in a 3-0 away win at the Stadium of the Mediterranean Games, 
home of UD Almeria.Two games later he scored his fourth La Liga goal of the season on 8th November 2009, in a 3-1 
home win over Real Zaragoza, when in the forty-first minute he made the score 3-0 before being replaced by Joaquin in 
the eighty-ninth minute. However his fifth was a long time arriving and it was not until the thirty-first game of the season 
on 11th April 2010 at the Iberostar Stadium at Palma, Majorca, in a 2-3 away defeat by RCD Mallorca when he got the 
second Valencia goal in the eighty-fifth minute to make the score 2-3. His goal in the Europa League Qualifiers came 
on 20th August 2009 in a 3-0 away win over Stabaek IF at the Telenor Arena at Fornebu in Baerum, outside Oslo, 
Norway, when he opened the scoring in the twenty-ninth minute before being replaced by Joaquin after seventy-one 
minutes. His goals in the Europa League were both scored in the 3-0 home after extra-time win over Club Brugge KV 
on 25th February 2010 when he scored Valencia's second and third goals in the ninety-seventh and  one hundred and 
seventeenth minutes. It was in 2009 -10 that Hernandez was called into the Spanish National squad. He had sat unused 
on the bench on 9th June 2009 as Spain triumphed 5-0 away to Azerbaijan in a Friendly. He then joined the squad for 
the Confederations Cup 2009. He twice sat on the bench as Spain beat New Zealand 5-0 on 14th June 2009 and then 
defeated by Iraq 1-0 three days later. He finally made his debut on 20th June 2009 at the Free State Stadium, 
Bloemfontein, South Africa as he came on in the sixtieth minute of a 2-0 win over South Africa as a substitute for David 
Villa. He then sat on the bench as Spain were beaten 0-2 by USA on 24th June 2009 and also for the third place play-off 
when they beat South Africa 3-2, after extra-time four days later. He was then once more on the bench on 14th November 
2009 in a 2-1 win over Argentina and four days later he was called on at half-time to replace David Silva in a 5-1 win over 
Austria at Ernst-Happel Stadium in Vienna and in the fifty-seventh minute he scored his first and only International goal to 
make the score 5-1. The 2010-11 Season again saw Hernandez as a regular in the Valencia CF line-up. In La Liga he 
scored five goals in twenty starts and seven from the bench, while he was the unused substitute on eight occasions as 
Valencia finished third in La Liga. In the UEFA Champions League he scored twice in five starts and one as a substitute 
and was an unused substitute twice. While in the Copa Del Ray he started twice and and was an used substitute once. 
His five La Liga goals were again spread across the season, his first coming in the third game of the season on 19th 
September 2010, when he gave Valencia a 2-0 lead in the twenty-second minute in a 2-1 away win at the Jose Rico 
Perez Stadium in Alicante, against Hercules FC. His second goal came in the seventh game in the 1-2 defeat by FC 
Barcelona, at the Camp Nou, on 16th October 2010, in the thirty-seventh minute, as he opened the scoring in the game, 
giving Valencia a temporary 1-0 advantage. The third was in the nineteenth game of the season, in the 2-0 home win 
over Deportivo de La Coruna on 16th January 2011, when he got the second goal three minutes into time added for 
stoppages. The final two League goals came in the twenty-seventh game of the season on 5th March 2011 in a 2-1 win 
over RCD Mallorca  at the Iberostar Stadium at Palma, Majorca, when he equalised in the thirty-third minute before 
getting the winner in the fifty-sixth minute. His two goals in the UEFA Champions League both came in the Group C 
games, which they got through to qualify for the last sixteen but were beaten 4-2 on aggregate by FC Schalke. The first 
came in a 4-0 win over Bursaspor at the Bursa Ataturk Stadium on 14th September 2010, when he scored the third goal 
in the sixty-eighth minute and his second came at Old Trafford on 7th December 2010 when he gave Valencia a 1-0 
lead over Manchester United in the thirty-second minute in a game that finished 1-1 and he was replaced in the eighty-
first minute by Sofiane Feghouli. He gained his final two International caps in 2010-11, with two more substitute 
appearances in Friendly Internationals to bring his total to four. On 10th August 2010 he came on as a replacement for 
David Villa in the seventy-sixth in a 3-1 home win over Lithuania  at the Helmantico Stadium in Villares de la Reina, 
Salamanca. His fourth and final cap came as a sixty-ninth minute substitute for Santi Cazorla at Hampden Park, 
Glasgow, on 10th December 2010 in a 3-2 win over Scotland, which gave him one hundred and ten minutes on the 
International field.In the 2011-12 season, once more Hernandez was a regular with Valencia, scoring three goals in 
nineteen starts and eleven games from the bench, while being unused once as Valencia once more came third in La 
Liga. He also made four starts and came from the bench once in the Copa Del Ray. While in Europen games he scored 
once  in four starts and two games from the bench in  the UEFA Champions League where they failed to qualify for the 
knockout games and instead he scored once in three starts and one game from the bench and was once unused as 
Valencia made it to the Semi-Finals of the Europa League, where they were beaten 5-2 on aggregate by Athletico 
Madrid. His three La Liga goals all came at home at the Mestalla, and came firstly in the fifth game on 21st September 
2011 in a 2-2 draw with FC Barcelona, when he gave Valencia a 2-1 lead in the twenty-third minute, then Secondly he 
gave Valencia the lead with the opening goal in the eighth minute of the twenty-ninth game on 21st March 2012 in a 1-2 
defeat by Real Zaragoza in a game that he was replaced in the eighty-first minute by Pablo Piatti, and thirdly in the 
thirty-third game on 11th April 2012 in a 4-1 win over Rayo Vallecano, when he got the final goal in the eighty-eighth 
minute. His goal in the UEFA Champions League was in the 7-0 home win over KRC Genk on 23rd November 2011 
when he scored the fifth goal in the sixty-eighth minute and his goal in the Europa League was in the 4-0 home win 
over AZ Alkmaar on 5th April 2012, when after coming on to replace Sofiane Feghouli in the seventy-sixth minute he 
scored the fourth goal four minutes later. After four good seasons with Valencia, in which they finished third in La Liga 
in the last three seasons, on 31st August 2012 he joined EPL side Swansea City for £5,940,000. Since resigning with 
Valencia CF he had scored sixteen goals in seventy-six starts and thirty-five games from the bench, and sat unused in 
twenty-four La Liga games. In the Copa Del Ray he had scored once in ten starts and one game from the bench and 
been unused in two others. In European games he had scored eight goals in twenty-six starts and seven games from 
the bench and sat six times as an unused substitute. He had also started two games in the Supa Cup without scoring. 
He arrived at the Liberty Stadium to sample life in the EPL and soon settled down as the Swans established 
themselves amongst the English elite, but missed the month of December with thigh problems. He made his debut on 
15th September 2012 when he came on as a substitute for Wayne Routledge in the fifty-seventh minute in a 0-2 defeat 
by Aston Villa at Villa Park. A week later he made his starting debut at the Liberty Stadium in a 0-3 home defeat by 
Everton and he was replaced at half-time by Nathan Dyer. He again started in a 0-2 defeat by Stoke City at the 
Britannia Stadium on 29th September 2012, when he was replaced in the sixty-third minute by Wayne Routledge. He 
was not first choice for the 2-2 home draw with Reading but came on as a sixty-second minute substitute for Nathan 
Dyer. He scored his first goal for Swansea in the following game on 20th October 2012 in a 2-1 home win over Wigan 
Athletic, when he again started and opened the scoring in the sixty-fifth minute, before being substituted by Nathan 
Dyer eight minutes later. He again started in the 0-1 defeat by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium but gave way to 
Nathan Dyer twelve minutes from time. He was by now, starting to become a regular and in the next game at home to 
Chelsea and he scored a vital goal in the eighty-eighth minute that secured a point from Chelsea as he equalised to 
make the final score 1-1 two minutes before time on 3rd November 2012. It was the first time he had played the full 
ninety minutes and he repeated this feat in the next three games and thrice made assists in the next four games. It 
was a trait that he would become well-known for, but in the fourth of those games a 3-1 home win over West 
Bromwich Albion, he left the field in the seventy-fourth minute was replaced by Jonathan De Guzman, it was an 
hamstring injury that caused him to miss the next four games, but he was back on 29th December 2012 for the 2-1 
win at Fulham when he reclaimed his starting place in the team. He was then ever-present until the end of the season 
scoring one more goal in the 4-1 home win over Queens Park Rangers on 9th February 2013 and adding five more 
Assists to finish the season with three goals in twenty-seven starts and three substitute appearances as the Swans 
finished a commendable ninth in the EPL. In the Football League Cup he had two more Assists in four starts and won 
a winners' medal when they defeated Bradford City 5-0 at Wembley on 24th February 2013. He also made two 
substitute appearances in the F.A. Cup. In his second season with Swansea City in 2013-14 his season was 
interrupted by hamstring injuries which caused him to miss nine EPL, four Europa League, one F.A. Cup and one 
League Cup games but he was still value for money, scoring twice in seventeen starts and ten games from the 
bench in the EPL and created seven assists and Swansea finished a creditable twelfth, started twice in the F.A. 
Cup and he started four and came off the bench in two in the European League in which he also made two assists. 
His first EPL goal of the season came in the eighty-third minute of a 2-0 win in their third game of the season over 
West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns when he got the Swans' second goal on 1st September 2013. His second 
came in his penultimate League game on 26th April 2014 in a 4-1 home win over Aston Villa when he scored the 
third goal in the seventy-third minute to make the score 3-1. He was sold to Al-Arabi Sports Club of Doha in Qatar 
for £ 4.25 million on 15th July 2014, having scored five goals in forty-four starts and played another thirteen from the 
bench in the EPL, started two and been a substitute twice in the F.A. Cup, started four in the League Cup and started 
four and come off the bench twice in the European League. Once more he was a regular starting eleven and coming 
from the bench twice in the fifteen Qatar Stars League and he scored six goals, which all came at home in the Grand 
Hamad Stadium, as Al-Arabi Sports Club finished eighth in the League. He made a scoring debut on 21st August 
2014 in a 3-1 home win over Al-Khor Sports Club, in which he scored the third goal in the eighty-seventh minute. In 
his fourth game on 19th September 2014 in a 4-0 home win over Al-Shamal, he scored twice getting the third and 
fourth goals in the seventieth  and eighty-sixth minute before being subsituted in the eighty-ninth minute. In the club's 
thirteenth match of the season, he came on as a sixty-sixth minute substitute for Imoh Ezekiel, but still managed to 
score twice as he turned a 0-2 deficit into a 2-2 draw in the home game with Qatar Sports Club  with goals in the 
seventy-second and eighty-first minute. In the fifteenth and final game in a 2-1 home win over Al-Gharafa Sports Club 
he got the winning goal in the eighty-ninth minute. He was loaned to Al-Nasr (Dubai) of the UAE Arabian Gulf League 
on 27th January 2015, for the second part of the seaon, where he scored three goals in twelve games as his club 
finished fifth in the League and won the Cup, before returning to Al-Arabi Sports Club of Doha. On 31st August 2015 
he was loaned to Rayo Vallecano of Spain for the 2015-16 season. Again he suffered from hamstring problems 
which caused him to miss eight La Liga games. However, that apart, he was a regular for his new club in La Liga 
and Copa Del Ray games, scoring three goals in twenty-four starts and playing three games from the bench as his 
new club finished eighteenth in La Liga, which saw them relegated, and started twice and came off the bench once 
and was once unused in the Copa Del Ray. He made his debut in the club's third game of the season in a 1-3 home 
defeat by Deportivo de La Coruna at Campo de Futbol de Vallecas in the Madrid neighbourhood of Vallecas on 
14th September 2014, in which he was substituted by Luis Farina in the eighty-second minute. He then played a full 
game in the 1-0 win over UD Las Palmas, at the Estadio de Gran Canaria, on 20th September 2014, which was 
followed by a start in the 2-1 home win over Sporting Gijon on 23rd September 2014 but he was taken off with a 
hamstring injury in the twenty-sixth minute when he was replaced by  Adrian Embarba. The injury caused him to 
miss the next four games, but he returned for the game on 1st November 2014 as they were beaten 0-1 at SD 
Eibar at the Ipurua Stadium and he came on as a fifty-third minute substitute for Jozabed Sanchez. He started in 
the 7th November 2014 2-1 home win over Granada CF and made one assist before being replaced by Patrick 
Ebert in the seventy-fourth minute. There was a further assist in a 1-2 home loss to Malaga CF on 13th December 
2014, before he scored his first goal of the season in a 1-2 defeat at Levante UD at Ciutat de Valencia Stadium on 
9th January 2015, when he reduced the arrears with the Rayo Vallecano goal in the eighty-third minute. He made 
another Assist in the 2-2 away draw with Sporting Gijon on 12th February 2015 at the El Molinon Stadium. He was 
again out injured for four games with hamsreing problems from 27th February to 19th March 2015, but in his return 
game he scored his second goal of the season in a 2-2 draw with Granada CF at Nuevo Los Carmenes Stadium, 
when he levelled the scores at 1-1 two minutes into injury time at the end of the first half. There was another Assist 
in the 2-0 home win over Getafe CF on 1st April 2015 before he scored his third goal of the season in the club's 
final La Liga game of the season in a 3-1 home win over Levante UD on 15th May 2015 when he opened the 
scoring in the twelfth minute of his final game for the club. On 1st August 2016, after a medical examination, he was 
loaned to Leeds United for six months, with an option for purchase at the end of that period in the January 2017 
transfer window. International clearance was not obtained in time for United's opening game of the season with 
Queens Park Rangers on 7th August 2016 and so he made his starting debut in the League Cup win at Fleetwood 
Town on 10th  August 2016. He played a full game as the game went to penalties after extra-time and it was he that 
scored the fifth penalty that proved to be the winner as Eggert Jonsson's spot kick was saved by Rob Green. He 
made his starting League debut three days later in a 1-2 home defeat by Birmingham City, when he was replaced 
by Stuart Dallas with four minutes left. He became a regular in United's midfield starting in the 1-1 home draw with 
Fulham on 16th August 2016, when he was replaced by Alex Mowatt in the seventy-first minute. He was an unused 
substitute in the 2-0 away win at Sheffield Wednesday four days later, but started in an understrength team that won 
1-0 at Luton Town in the League Cup on 23rd August 2016 and played for sixty-seven minutes before being 
replaced by Alex Mowatt. He retained his place in the 1-3 away defeat at Nottingham Forest four days later but 
gave way to Alex Mowatt with ten minutes to go. his first goal came in the 2-0 away win at Cardiff City on 17th 
September 2016. Unfortunately his progress was hampered by a hamstring injury which occured in the final 
minutes of a 3-2 win over Norwich City at Carrow Road on 5th November 2016, which kept him out of the action 
for two months. His return was as a fifty-fourth minute substitute for Hadi Sacko in the 4-1 Boxing Day victory over 
Preston North End at Deepdale and he celebrated by scoring the fourth Leeds goal with two minutes left on the 
clock. On 9th January 2017 he signed a permanent six month contract with Leeds, thought to be a free transfer, with 
the option to extend it a further year at the end of the season. He celebrated this by turning on a "Man of the Match" 
performance as Leeds defeated Derby County 1-0 at Elland Road to go third in the League on 13th January 2017. 
He finished the season with six goals with the second goal in the fifty-fourth minute in 2-1 home win over Barnsley on 
1st October 2016, the second goal two minutes after half time in the 2-1 home win over Bristol City on 14th February 
2017, the second goal, just on half time in the 3-0 home win over Preston North End on 8th April 2017 and the 
seventy-eighth minute final equaliser in the 3-3 home draw with Norwich City on 29th April 2017. On 17th May 2017 
he agreed to the one year extension to his contract and remained the automatic choice in the playmaker role in the 
new season. The 2017-18 season saw Hernandez start thirty-four, come on as a substitute seven times and sat 
unused on the bench in another in the League, while in the League Cup he started one, was a subsitute in one and 
an unused substitute in one. He scored seven goals in the League and two in the League Cup. He also scored a 
penalty in the shoot out at Burnley in the League Cup.His first League goal of the season came on 9th September 
2017 from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time as he netted the third Leeds goal in a 5-0 home win over 
Burton Albion. The second came in the 2-1 home win over Middlesbrough on 19th November 2017, when he opened 
the scoring in the twenty-fourth minute. He netted another two in consecutive matches in the Christmas period, with 
the only goal in a 1-0 home win over Hull City on 23rd December 2017 and three days later he scored the equaliser 
in the sixty-first minute, after Burton Albion had taken the lead in a game where United hit back to claim a 2-1 away 
win. He also finished the season with a flourish as he scored three goals in four games with Uniteds second goal 
which gave them a 2-1 lead in a 2-2 draw at Reading on 10th March 2018. On 30th March 2018 he scored United's 
second goal at Bolton Wanderers to establish a 2-0 lead in a game that finished 2-1. His final goal earned United a 
point at home to Sunderland on 7th April 2018 when he scored the equaliser after seventy-two minutes. In the League 
Cup in the eventful Third Round Tie at Turf Moor on 19th September 2017, he replaced Pawel Cibicki in the seventy-
ninth minute and he gave United a 2-1 lead four minutes into injury-time, only for Burnley to level soon afterwards. He 
also scored with his penalty to level the scores at 5-5 and United prevailed 7-5 to take the tie. He was captain in the 
Fourth Round tie at Leicester City on 24th October 2017 and set the example by giving United the lead after twenty-
six minutes, but that was the high spot as the home side hit back to win 3-1. He was also the captain in six League 
games. He started the 2018-19 season in devastating form, scoring three goals in the first five League games. On 
5th August 2018, in the season opener at home to Stoke City, he score the second goal for United as he netted one 
minute into injury time on half-time as they cruised to a fine 3-1 home win. It was the first of four games in which he 
played a full game as United showed excellent form. His second goal of the League season was a seventy-ninth 
minute equaliser at Swansea City on 21st August 2018, but four days later it came to an end when he was injured in 
the seventy-ninth minute of a 3-0 win at Carrow Road over Norwich City four days later and had to be replaced by 
Jack Harrison after he had netted United's third goal after sixty-seven minutes. The injury sidelined him for a couple 
of months.
