Kirkpatrick began with Annan, before joining Queen of the South. He joined North Eastern League club Workington, in 1921-22 and Leeds signed him in May 1924. He proved a capable deputy to Bill Menzies before going to Watford in June 1927, after David Robinson and Jimmy Allan had been preferred as Menzies’ deputy. He played nine times for Watford before joining Scottish Third Division club Solway Star, in his native Annan. His elder brother John was a forward with Workington and Accrington Stanley.
