Westlake started with Thurnscoe Victoria before joining Sheffield Wednesday in May 1937. Like many players, Westlake’s career was severely curtailed by World War Two. He had made just one appearance for the Owls senior side before hostilities brought the Football League to a standstill. During the War Westlake guested for several clubs, one of which was Leeds United where he made one appearance, at left-back in a 1945-46 Football League Northern Section fixture in a 1-2 defeat by Burnley at Elland Road on 3rd November 1945. After the War he returned to Hillsborough and played another one hundred and nine times in the League and seven times in the FA Cup before joining Halifax Town in June 1950, where he made just two League appearances. He then went into Non-League football with Denaby United. He died in 1999.
