He was signed from junior club Shettleston Rovers in June 1959. He made his debut in the club’s first ever League Cup tie at home to Blackpool in September 1960, making his League debut the following Saturday at Elland Road against Ipwich Town. It also marked Jackie McGugan’s only game for Leeds and with the 5-2 defeat their cards were marked. However, St Johnstone’s scouts saw him score a hat-trick in a United ‘A’ team game and he was allowed to join the Scottish club in November 1960. He scored three times in sixteen League games for St Johnstone before joining Guildford City in 1963 and then returned north of the border to join Forfar Athletic, where he played two League games without scoring in 1965-66.
