Not much is known about Rutherford, other than he played three games for City late in the Principal Tournament of 1918-1919 season. His first game was in a 3-1 victory at Bradford Park Avenue, in which he stood in for John Hampson, but Hampson was available for the next fixture which was at home to Park Avenue. Rutherford was included as Hampson played at Outside Left in the 2-1 home fixture and the 0-1 defeat at Bramall Lane by Sheffield United. There is no record of Rutherford having played at Football League level in peace-time.
