Tompkins started League football with Second Division Doncaster Rovers in 1904 and scored once in fifteen League games before they were relegated at the end of the season. He also scored once in two F.A. Cup games. He left to join Non-League Denaby United before next emerging in the Football League with Second Division Leeds City in 1907. He missed only two of the first thirteen games but then lost his place and never played for Leeds again. He moved to Non-League Mexborough Town at the end of the season and did not play in the Football League again.
