Bell started with Annfield Plain. Leeds pipped Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City for Bell’s signature in December 1922, when he and John Armand joined from West Stanley. Although Armand played almost eighty games for United, Bell managed the lone game as Bert Duffield’s replacement. With limited opportunities he moved on to Third Division North team, Accrington Stanley, in May 1925, where he became a regular and made seventy League appearances. He was then transferred to Durham City, who were at the time also in the Third Division North, in August 1927, making eighteen League appearances before retiring at the end of the season. He died in Annfield Plain in autumn 1973 aged seventy-five.
