Edwards played Army football when he served in the REME in Palestine. He joined Mansfield Town from Woodhouse Amateurs as an amateur in August 1947 signing professional forms three months later. He represented Nottinghamshire in the Northern Counties Amateur Championship and Leeds signed him in March 1949, after he had scored five times in twenty-five appearances for Mansfield. After only two appearances for United he was released in August 1949 and he joined Leicester City. He did not make the first team there and in September 1950 signed for Rochdale, where he also failed to make a League appearance. He then moved to Non-League Boston United where he played for three years from the 1950-51 season
