Mason was overshadowed by Ernie Hart for whom he proved a reliable deputy at Leeds. He was signed from Whitburn in March 1922 and began the 1923-24 season as first choice, but lost out to firstly Len Baker and then Hart, who returned after injury. After that he was a capable deputy on the rare occasion Hart was not available but did also play twice at right half when the situation arose. He joined Bristol Rovers in July 1927, but did not get a start. In the summer of 1928 he went to Hartlepool United where he replaced ex-Leeds player, Billy Poyntz, as captain, and made thirteen League appearances and scored one goal in his one season there. He later played for West Stanley. He died in 1981.
